Welcome Freshers 2008!

Friends, Tories, Countrymen...

Firstly a big hello for those of you who have recently made the decision to come to Durham. Although its a relatively small place Durham is the oldest, most prestigious and highest ranked University in the North of England (Times Good University Guide 2008) . With the Conservative fight back in the North in full swing there is a very important part for DUCA to play, and an awful lot of fun to be had.

DUCA is Durham University's largest political organisation and by far its most active. We have well over one hundred members and usually run events of some kind every week. Our purpose is to promote the ideas and values of the UK Conservative Party both to the public at large and also to the student body. We do this by running political events, such as guest speakers, and purely social ones as well.

We also aim to aid Durham students in furthering the Conservative message. We hold regular internal debates, organise activist training as well as publicising information on forthcoming work placements and internships (as part of our Internbank scheme) making DUCA a great bonus for your CV.

Membership is as little as £5 and I hope to post details for next term's events very soon

Kind regards and welcome to Durham

Easter 2008

Hey Chaps, couple of things going on pre-exams;

1) This Saturday (the 27th) a delegation of Tories are to make a trip to Oxford for an event with Oxford University Conservative Association which should be a lot of fun and very lively. Spend a day in the city of dreaming spires, culminating in the highlight of the OUCA's week with a visit to their Port & Policy. Let’s show those Oxford Tories, that we may be up north but we too can debate! On the 27th April we will travel to Oxford by train. The best train to catch is the 10.37am direct to Oxford, though there is one 2 hours later if people can't manage it, but the longer we have in Oxford the better. This should result in us arriving in Oxford at around 3.20pm, giving us time to spend before joining the Oxford Tories for lively discussion at port and policy in the evening at 8pm, which will cost £6 each. The first motion will be: This House Believes that tighter immigration controls are integral to better public services. OUCA usually discuss several motions a night, with further motion suggested by the attendees.

Their President messaged me the following "P&P is really informal, and anyone can speak, it's also relatively drunken (we budget for about a 1/3 of a bottle of port each) which helps the debate flow. Anyway, I'm sure your members will enjoy it."
The plan is to return to Durham the next day on the 10.07 (via Birmingham New Street), however feel free to make the weekend of it if you like. You will need to arrange accommodation for the overnight stay yourself but knowing DUCA's sociable members - I'm sure you all have friends there. If you are interested in attending please email the assistant social secretary Ann at ann.daly@dur.ac.uk

2) City of Durham is fielding more Conservatives than any other association in County Durham, which isgreat. The local association are going out doing something pretty much every day in April. Any help delivering leaflets, canvassing, displaying posters, rallying the student vote etc is going to be really important. If you want to get involved please email Michael Fishwick michael_fishwick@yahoo.co.uk directly.

Michaelmas Updated

Beth posted a few events here a couple of weeks ago, some other stuff shall also be happening, so enjoy chaps!

1. Freshers Fair is on Tuesday 2nd October and Wednesday 3rd October in the DSU. I have booked DUCA a stand for both days and hopefully will be receiving the pack from the party soon with t-shirts, pens, posters etc to hand out. I would like as many people as possible to help out on those days.

2. On Friday 5th October we will be having afternoon tea with Graham Brady MP, a past DUCA President, at the La Tasca (the old Hog's Head). It is scheduled for 4pm but could change nearer the time. I have not met Graham before but I am sure he will be a fascinating guest especially in light of the recent grammar school debate. He will then be speaking at the Union later that evening.

3. Sometime the week after that we will be having Fresher Drinks followed by Klute.

4. Port and Policy with Nigel Evans MP for Ribble Valley in November (probs 24NBC), await further details.

And some of Duca's members are thinking of actively participating in 'Stand-Up, Speak-Up' by researching policy areas and coming up with some of our own manifesto suggestions, speak to me at an upcoming event if you're interested in a specific area of public policy.

Stand Up Speak Up Campaign

I was recently sent this because I am member of the Conservative Policy Forum. I think it would be great if many DUCA members got involved with this initiative.

'A few days ago David Cameron launched 'Stand Up Speak Up'-- a crucially important consultation exercise to help him and the Shadow Cabinet as they develop our programme for government, following the conclusion of the most comprehensive review of policy ever, carried out by six main Policy Groups and over twenty task forces since
David became leader at the end of 2005.

David himself has stressed that ' we are not automatically accepting every recommendation in the Policy Review reports. There will be some proposals we do not agree with.

In some areas, hard choices will have to be made between competing priorities and, of course, no policies will be adopted until they have been properly costed by the Shadow
Chancellor, George Osborne.

It is against that background that the vital ' Stand Up Speak Up' consultation has been organised---to initiate a nationwide debate before Conservative policy for the future is put into a
hard and fast form .

David is inviting everyone to have their say because he wants to stimulate and revitalise democratic debate in Britain: for far too long too many people have not been properly engaged
in that debate.

I do hope that you may be able to find the time to contribute to ' Stand Up Speak Up'.

The results of the consultation process are bound to be more valuable and better informed if CPF members are fully involved since they have such a well-developed understanding of public policy issues as a result of their discussions in CPC/CPF Groups over the years. I know that
David Cameron will be particularly glad to have the expert views of CPF members

Full details of how 'Stand Up Speak Up' operates can be found at http://standupspeakup.conservatives.com/ <http://standupspeakup.conservatives.com/ > and a team of advisers are available on 0207 984 8277 or standupspeakup@conservatives.com .'

Events for Next Term

2. On Friday 5th October we will be having afternoon tea with Graham Brady MP, a past DUCA President, at the Marriott County Hotel. It is scheduled for 3.30pm but could change nearer the time. I have not met Graham before but I am sure he will be a fascinating guest especially in light of the recent grammar school debate. He will then be speaking at the Union later that evening.

3. Sometime the week after that we will be having Fresher Drinks at Fabios followed by Klute.

4. On October 25th Roger Helmer MEP will be coming up to Durham for dinner and drinks. He is an excellent speaker and all round good egg so that should not be missed!

Hope that sounds ok!
